MANGLED MERMAID OF PAIA BAY
Paia, Maui, Hawaii
artist: ynez reyes '99
Here's a second view of the driftwood at Paia Bay nude beach. Do you see the little bird pecking the hair of the "mangled mermaid" (actually the roots of the tree that fell down with the high surf a few years ago. He got a good meal that day with all the bugs living in the mangled mass of her hair, as the mermaid reclines in the beach to bleach her wood.
This was my backyard for a couple of years in Paia. I had a little garden there. And there were always lots of bananas. It would have been more fun if my neighbor's studio weren't so close. He did the most wonderful things with wood, and is also a great artist. But he wore the earphones while he worked. But it made me get out a bit more than I would have, and that certainly was good.

BANANA PATCH FANTASY PRODUCTIONS

Have you been to Hanamanu? It's on the way to Hana, Maui. It's a long curvy road, and dangerous. But then you get to Hanamanu Bay. The black sand glistens in the sun. Youcan feel the spray coming down the two lane highway into the valley. It is lush. Ginger grows profusely, infusing the air with a mystical scent of a sweet reality.
Even living in Paia gets stressful. Too many people liked coming over to my high beamed ceilinged studio. So I'd pack up the cooler and gas up the van every now and then and head out to Hanamanu. There I could camp at night by the rocky shore. My kids loved surfing there. The Hawaiians put their nets out to catch some fish. While they waited they would scourer the rocks for ono opihi which they cook over an open fire. They're generous too, and the opihi tastes great the way they make it. I spent days there camping out, writing my novel and scripts, listening to the stars and playing guitar to the moon.
